My Intuitive Eating Adventure

I'm all about embracing a vibrant, fit, and healthy lifestyle, and here's a little secret: I don't count calories or macros. Nope, not a single one! I've totally freed myself from any kind of diet mindset. What's my go-to approach? It's this cool thing called intuitive eating.

I've noticed quite a few of you are curious about intuitive eating, keen to explore this liberating way of living. So, why not dive in together? Let's get started on this journey!

After facing my own struggles with an eating disorder and meeting various dietitians, one incredible woman shifted my whole view on food. She helped me rebuild a healthy relationship with food – all thanks to introducing me to intuitive eating

What is intuitive eating?

Intuitive eating is like a breath of fresh air for your relationship with food. Whether you've been tangled in disordered eating, stuck in the fad diet cycle, or just feel off-track with food, this approach is a game-changer. It helps you ditch the food worries, stop labeling foods as 'good' or 'bad,' and truly understand the difference between physical hunger and emotional eating. And the cherry on top? You get to truly enjoy life and socialize without stressing over every bite. It's about living freely and joyfully

I learned most everything I know about intuitive eating either from my dietitian, the classroom as a dietetic intern, or from my own personal experience/implementation of it in my own life and many of my clients’ lives.

Reject the Diet Mentality:

Toss aside those diet books and magazines promising quick, easy weight loss. Get mad at the lies that made you feel like a failure every time a diet fizzled out and the weight crept back. Holding onto hope for that miracle diet just keeps you from embracing Intuitive Eating fully.

Honor Your Hunger:

Nourish your body with enough energy and carbs. Ignoring hunger can trigger an overwhelming urge to overeat. By responding to your initial hunger signals, you lay the groundwork for rebuilding trust with yourself and food.

Make Peace with Food:

End the food battle! Allow yourself to eat without conditions. Restricting certain foods leads to intense cravings and often bingeing. When you finally cave, you might overeat to the point of guilt and regret. Saying yes to your food cravings can help you eat more mindfully and feel satisfied sooner.

Challenge the Food Police:

Shout a firm "NO" to those inner voices that label you as 'good' for eating less or 'bad' for indulging in a dessert. These are the unreasonable rules set by diet culture. Banishing these thoughts is key to embracing Intuitive Eating.

Respect Your Fullness:

Pay attention to your body's signals that you're not hungry anymore. Notice when you feel comfortably full. Mid-meal, take a moment to assess how the food tastes and how full you feel.

Discover the Satisfaction Factor: Like the Japanese, who value pleasure in healthy living, find joy and satisfaction in eating. Eating what you truly crave in a pleasant environment can lead to feeling content with less food.

Honor Your Feelings Without Using Food:

Seek ways to comfort and deal with emotions without resorting to food. Anxiety, loneliness, and anger each need non-food solutions. Eating might provide temporary relief but won't solve the underlying issue.

Respect Your Body: Accept your genetic makeup. Just as you wouldn't force your feet into too-small shoes, don't push your body to be a size it's not meant to be. Respecting your body shape is crucial for moving away from diet thinking.

Exercise – Feel the Difference:

Choose enjoyable activities over strict exercise regimes. Focus on the feel-good factor of moving your body, rather than calorie burning. If you exercise for energy and joy, it becomes a lot more appealing.

Honor Your Health with Gentle Nutrition: Make choices that honor both your health and taste buds, and leave you feeling good. Remember, perfection isn't necessary for a healthy diet. It's your overall eating patterns that matter, not one single food choice.
